You are not what you do

Buckminster Fuller defined synergy as the behavior of whole systems that can't be predicted from the behavior of their parts. Large language models are the best example of it we have right now: millions of people's answers, a lot of them from Stack Overflow, mixed together until something comes out that none of them wrote.

I benefit from that every day. I also notice that I'm guarded about some of what I know. I want to teach people, and at the same time I'm afraid to give up the skills that feel like mine. I don't like feeling like a gatekeeper.

Kill your darlings

Writers say it about the sentence you're proudest of: that's often the one to cut. There's a deeper version. Whatever comes to mind when you ask what's special about you is probably not it. Anything you can name, you can hand off. What's left after you hand off everything nameable isn't a thing you do well. It's the place you look from: what you notice, what you care about, when you say "wait."

You are not what you do.

Guarding isn't gatekeeping

Not posting what you sell is pricing. Gatekeeping is keeping people out so you feel bigger. Teaching is the opposite of both.

My mother was a public librarian. Her whole job was the opposite of gatekeeping: putting knowledge into the hands of whoever walked in. Most of what I value came from her.

Why it matters now

Stack Overflow's traffic has fallen sharply since LLMs arrived. The commons that trained them is drying up. The people who keep teaching in public are what keeps the synergy going.
